I Will Never Take My Mother For Granted

"Good morning! Hey Rafie, congratulation for winning the race competition yesterday." I heard someone talking behind me. "Oh, thanks. It was just my luck." I replied. "Oh Rafie. Don't be so humble. You have always been our school best athlete." said Iylia. I laughed while I opened my shoes locker. There were lots of papers came out of my locker. Red and pink papers are on the floor and there are some heart-shaped paper. Ugh. These again. "Wow, wow, wow. Triple wows for you Rafie. So you're receiving more letters today." said Hadi, my best friend. I nodded while I took my shoes from the locker. "I wish I were you, Rafie. You are famous, active in sport and good at academics. But the most crucial thing is, you are handsome! Just look at your hazel eyes." said Hadi. "Yeah, whatever Hadi. Say what you want but please, stop being so gay. Hahaha" I replied.

"Good luck for your final examination Abang Rafie," I could still imagine the way Hani wished me this morning. Hani was my junior and I had a crush on her. Nobody knew about this. A month had passed and the result of the final examination had been announced. "... and the best student of this year is... Nur Rafie bin Hamdan!" said the teacher who was in charged for the announcement. Almost everyone in school knew me. I received lots of compliments. I passed by a teacher and he told me to come at the ceremony while he gave me a parents-information-letter. "Please Rafie, make sure you come this weekend." said the teacher. I nodded. "Oh, and bring your parents along." he added. I had received the 'best student' tittle in every form for four years in a row but I had never come to the ceremony.

I put the letter on the table. I did not think that I would come this year. But then, Hani called. "Abang Rafie, I really hope that you will come to the ceremony. After the ceremony, I have a flight to Russia. My family and I will move there. My father got a promotion but he has to work there. So we have to follow him.". "I will try, Hani." I said. On the ceremony day, I got to meet her for the last time. I did not confess anything about my feeling towards her though. "Hey! Who is that Old Lady, Rafie?" asked Hani. "Look at her eye. She has only an eye." said Hadi who suddenly came out of nowhere. "And her eye is hazel in colour." said Iylia. Everyone there stared at me. "Abang Rafie, is she your mother?" asked Hani. "Oh no. Maybe she is a beggar and she is hungry. Here you are aunty. Take this money and go away. This place is not suitable for you. I mean there are too many people here." I said while pushing her away.

"Mom! Why did you come to my school. I have told you that you should never come there. You are not allowed to go there!" I shouted. "But Rafie, my son, I've always wanted to see you receiving the scroll. Just now, you did not even introduce me to your friends. I've always wanted to get to know your friends. You called me beggar but not 'mom'" she replied softly. "Why are you being so busybody?" I replied. "Rafie, I'm your mom. How could you say something like that. Is it wrong to care for my own son? I am the one who gave birth to you. How could you Rafie, how could you?" she said. I could see tears on her cheeks. "What? You're not my mom. Every mom in this world must has two eyes. But you? You only have an eye." I replied. "I never thought when you have grown up, you are going to let me hear those nasty words that come out of your mouth." she cried and she went away or to be exact, I was the one who told her to go away. I never stand a chance to meet her after that. This is actually a sad truth of mine. Despite being popular, handsome and good at everything, I am actually a son of this woman.

10 years had passed. When I was in my last year of school, I survived my life alone. My mom never came back. I wondered if she is still alive. Now, I am a successful doctor. I am an ophthalmologist. I have my own clinic and Hani is now a wife of mine. "Abang Rafie, I want to tell you something." said Hani. "Yes, love? What do you want to tell me?". Hani gave me a letter. I read it and pathetically, I cried. My mom lied to me. She did not not lose one of her eye because of an accident. She gave it to me! She gave her eye to this sinful son. I had fallen from by bicycle and there was a nail that entered my left eye. I was unconscious and lose my memory because my head hit the ground and it was severe. My mom loves me so much that she did not want me to suffer when I have grown up. But what have I done to her?

I came to my mom's house. It was full of dust. I shouted, "Mom! If you were here, I am going to hug you. I want to say I love you. I want you to know how I feel sorry for you. I'm full of sins. I want you to know that I'm a doctor now. I want you to know that I got straight A+'s  on my SPM. I want you to know even if I said I hate you before, I have those missing-you feeling deep in my heart. Now, I have remembered everything. I remember how the accident occurred. I remember how hard for you to console me. I remember how your eyes became very red because crying too much for me. Everything is for me. Mom, if you were here, I want to say I love you. I love you very much. I can find eye donor for you, you know? Or you can take yours back. What I want right now, is you." I cried. Suddenly I saw Hani coming towards me. She was pushing a wheelchair. "Mom!" I rushed towards her. I hugged her. This might be my second chance. Thanks God. I will never take my mother for granted.
